Love and Life
Happy New Year's folks! As we approach the end of January, and Spring gradually approaches, we are moving towards another one of our man made holidays. This is Valentine's Day. We must investigate the reason for the season again.
My fondest memories of this day is as a youth, when I put small cards into the mailboxes of my friends in elementary school. I would write special notes to the girls in class that I was fond of. Later on in life, this holiday got more expensive. When I had girlfriends, I was forced to think of innovative ways to express my love. Innovativeness sometimes became directly correlated with expensiveness. Or at least I perceived this.I don't have a girlfriend this year who will expect an "innovative" gift from me.
I have forewarned anyone who would that I will not be sharing nor expecting one in return. Instead, I will look to express love in a different way. Not by the standards that have been developed from Sun-God worship. I will express love by giving what I hope to receive in return. This gift is free and is composed of thoughtfulness, the willingness to listen, and a commitment to my loved one's growth and development. I heard the Minister say that Love is Duty. I think that these superficial holidays get us into the fantastical thought of love without understanding the realistic ACTIONS associated with it. Therefore, any of my readers who love me, please commit yourself to the duties of that verb. Love in the noun form is useless to me.
We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's lightwe dare be brave
And suddenly we seethat love costs all we areand will ever be.
Yet it is only lovewhich sets us free
